This project contrasts the unspoken and overlooked behaviours of everyday city life, by placing urban characters and moments into our nations quiet and hard-working surrounding rural countryside.
By merging real urban and rural locations, such as Threadneedle-upon-Wetton— a blend of London's financial district and the idyllic working village of Wetton in Staffordshire—the project creates these fictional ‘halfway’ places that hint at the invisible societal disconnects that exists between living in these two places.
Moving from the north of England to London 20 something years ago, I immediately noticed these unspoken, overlooked moments that have now become an everyday normal.
"Town int Country" explores the invisible contrasts between city and country life, suggesting the social judgment and isolation we find and feel in urban settings. Placing these everyday city moments in serene rural environments, makes their behaviours appear strikingly incongruous and even absurd. This project invites viewers to reflect on how urban and rural lifestyles feel poles apart, offering a brief glimpse and commentary on societal norms, human interaction and the wider connection of this place called ‘Great Britain’.
